How Spray Foam Insulation St. Paul Works

Spray Foam Insulation St. Paul insulates and air seals houses, duplexes, additions and garages in St. Paul and the surrounding east metro suburbs. We spray closed-cell and open-cell foam, blow in cellulose and fiberglass, fill closed wall cavities in older homes, and remove insulation that is wet, contaminated or in the way of proper sealing.

Every job starts with a look at the house. On the visit we go into the attic, check the basement or crawl space, and look at the walls you are worried about. We measure what insulation is there now and note its condition. We look for the leaks that cost the most in a Minnesota winter: open stud bays under kneewalls, chimney and plumbing chases, recessed lights, the attic hatch, and the rim joist where the framing sits on the foundation. We also point out anything that should be dealt with before insulation goes in, such as roof leaks, damp sill plates, knob-and-tube wiring or old vermiculite.

After that we tell you what we would do and why. Foam is the right tool for some surfaces and the wrong one for others. A wide open attic floor is often best served by sealing the bypasses with foam and blowing loose fill on top. Rim joists, cathedral ceilings and kneewall attics usually call for foam. Closed plaster walls in a 1920s house usually call for dense-pack fill from outside or inside. When two methods would both work, the quote shows both.

How we run a job

  • Inspect first. No price until we have seen and measured the spaces.
  • Write it down. Each area on the quote lists the material, thickness or depth, target R-value and price.
  • Seal, then insulate. Air leaks are closed before new insulation covers them.
  • Protect the house. Floors and belongings are covered, the work area is closed off, and ventilation is planned for foam days.
  • Plan around the weather. Foam needs surfaces within the maker's temperature range, so attic and garage work in deep winter gets scheduled with that in mind.
  • No changes without sign-off. Work starts after you approve the quote, and any change is agreed in writing first.

Who calls us

Owners of older St. Paul houses with cold upstairs rooms, icicles along the eaves or plaster walls that feel cold to the touch. Suburban owners finishing a basement who want the rim joist sealed first. People getting ready for a utility rebate who need a blower door test before and after.
